Caring For Kayleen: Fight Like A Girl

Acute Myeloid Leukemia has a survival rate of 80% in the first initial treatment. Those who relapse, 75% will go into remission from the treatment, and go to a bone marrow transplant, from which there is a 50% chance of survival past 5 years. The remaining 25% or so who do not get into remission in the second round of treatment, are then considered refractory, non-curable with current treatment plans. They go into experimental trials and have a 10% or less chance of survival and get into a Bone Marrow Transplant.
Yesterday we had the opportunity to help Kayleen Larson. A little girl fighting AML Leukemia. One of our Northway members came to us with a quick, but meaningful project. A plaque, for a memorial park bench, in honor of Kayleen. Who has only a few weeks left. After the question “Who thinks we should take this on?” Not one of us hesitated and we all raised our hands, which confirmed we were doing it. We knew about Kayleen’s love of ladybugs, so that was a must to incorporate in the design. With only 6 hours to create the plaque, we all dove head first into the project. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kayleen and her family through this difficult time.
